An Isospin Analysis of CPCP Violation in BdDπB_{d}\to D\pi, DπD^{*}\pi and DρD\rho

By use of current experimental data, we carry out an isospin analysis of the weak decays BDπ,DπB\rightarrow D\pi, D^{*}\pi and DρD\rho. It is found that only in BDρB\rightarrow D\rho the strong phase shift of two different isospin amplitudes can be approximately neglected. We derive some useful relations between the CPCP-violating measurables and the weak and strong transition phases, and illustrate the different effects of final-state interactions on CPCP violation in BdDπ,DπB_{d}\rightarrow D\pi, D^{*}\pi and DρD\rho.Comment: LaTex 9 pages (3 figs). A misleading assumption is removed and a little more material is added. (Accepted for publication in Phys. Lett. B

Effect of the Space-like Penguin Diagrams on CP Asymmetries in Exclusive B Decays

The space-like penguin contributions were ignored on little ground in many previous studies of nonleptonic B decays and CP violation. Taking the penguin-dominated channels BuKˉ0πB^{-} _{u}\rightarrow \bar{K}^{0}\pi and BuK0KB^{-}_{u}\rightarrow K^{0} K^{-} for example, we illustrate the non-negligible effects of the space-like penguin diagrams on CP asymmetries. Some quali- tative remarks are given on the gluonic penguin picture and the direct CP violation in exclusive two-body decays of B mesons.Comment: 10 Latex pages, 2 figures. Investigation of RNA Binding Protein Pumilio as a Genetic Modifier of Mutant CHMP2B in Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD): A Masters Thesis

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the second most common early-onset dementia. A rare mutation in CHMP2B gene was found to be associated with FTD linked to chromosome 3. Previous studies have shown that mutant CHMP2B could lead to impaired autophagy pathway and altered RNA metabolism. However, it is still unknown what genes mediate the crosstalk between different pathways affected by mutant CHMP2B. Genetic screens designed to identify genes interacting with mutant CHMP2B represents a key approach in solving the puzzle. Expression of mutant CHMP2B (CHMP2Bintron5) in Drosophila eyes leads to a neurodegenerative phenotype including melanin deposition and disrupted internal structure of ommatidia. The phenotype is easily quantified by estimating the percentage of black dots on the surface of the eyes. Using this established Drosophila model, I searched for genes encoding RNA binding proteins that genetically modify CHMP2Bintron5 toxicity. I found that partial loss of Pumilio, a translation repressor, mitigates CHMP2Bintron5 induced toxicity in the fly eyes. Western blot analysis showed that down regulation of Pumilio does not significantly decrease CHMP2Bintron5 protein level, indicating indirect regulation involved in suppression of the phenotype. The molecular targets regulated by Pumilio and the mechanism underlying CHMP2Bintron5 toxicity suppression by Pumilio down-regulation requires further investigation

Lepton Mass Hierarchy and Neutrino Mixing

We speculate that the mass spectrum of three neutrinos might have a normal hierarchy as that of three charged leptons or that of three up-type (or down-type) quarks. In this spirit, we propose a novel parametrization of the 3×33\times 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix. Its mixing angles θl\theta_l and θν\theta_\nu can be related to the mass ratios me/mμm_e/m_\mu and m1/m2m_1/m_2 in a specific texture of lepton mass matrices with vanishing (1,1) elements: tanθl=me/mμ\tan\theta_l = \sqrt{m_e/m_\mu} and tanθν=m1/m2\tan\theta_\nu = \sqrt{m_1/m_2}. The latter relation, together with solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation data, predicts 0.0030 eV m1\lesssim m_1 \lesssim 0.0073 eV, 0.009 eV m2\lesssim m_2 \lesssim 0.012 eV and 0.042 eV m3\lesssim m_3 \lesssim 0.058 eV. The smallest neutrino mixing angle is found to be θ13θl/23\theta_{13} \approx \theta_l/\sqrt{2} \approx 3^\circ, which is experimentally accessible in the near future.Comment: RevTex 10 pages, 2 figure

Effect of K0Kˉ0K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0} Mixing on CPCP Asymmetries in Weak Decays of DD and BB Mesons

Within the standard electroweak model we carry out an instructive analysis of the effect of K0Kˉ0K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0} mixing on CPCP asymmetries in some weak decay modes of D±D^{\pm} and B()\stackrel{(-)}{B}d0^{0}_{d} mesons. We point out that a clean signal of CPCP violation with magnitude of 2Re(ϵ\epsilon) 3.3×103\approx 3.3\times 10^{-3} can manifest in the semileptonic decays D+l+νl KSD^{+}\rightarrow l^{+}\nu^{~}_{l}K_{S} (KLK_{L}) vs Dlνˉl KSD^{-}\rightarrow l^{-}\bar{\nu}^{~}_{l}K_{S} (KLK_{L}). The CPCP asymmetries are also dominated by 2Re(ϵ\epsilon) in the two-body nonleptonic decays D±(π±,ρ±,a1±)+(KS,KL)D^{\pm} \rightarrow (\pi^{\pm}, \rho^{\pm}, a^{\pm}_{1})+ (K_{S}, K_{L}) and in the multi-body processes D±π±+n0π0+n±(π±π)+(KS,KL)D^{\pm}\rightarrow \pi^{\pm}+n_{0}\pi^{0}+n_{\pm} (\pi^{\pm}\pi^{\mp})+ (K_{S}, K_{L}), where n0n_{0} and n±n_{\pm} are integers. It is possible to observe such CPCP-violating signals with about 10710^{7} D±D^{\pm} events at τ\tau-charm factories or hadron machines. Finally we show that the CPCP asymmetry induced by Re(ϵ\epsilon) may compete with those from Bd0Bˉd0B^{0}_{d}-\bar{B}^{0}_{d} mixing and final-state interactions in the semi-inclusive and exclusive decays BdX(ccˉ)+(KS,KL)B_{d}\rightarrow X(c\bar{c})+(K_{S}, K_{L}) on the Υ(4S)\Upsilon (4S) resonance.Comment: 10 Latex pages + 2 figures.
